This article describes how to check that a computer, running either Windows or Mac OS X, is fully up-to-date with the latest protection from SophosLabs.

Checking your computers are up-to-date can be done centrally with the Enterprise Console. However, the process shown below is useful where a single computer (or perhaps a small group of computers) is either not connected to the main network, or connects infrequently, in which case you cannot check from a central location, when the last update occurred.

What to do

Check when the latest update occurred, and if necessary, the versions of software that are on your computer.

Note: hovering over the Sophos shield indicates when checks were last made, but doesn't necessarily indicate when it was actually last updated.

On a Windows 2000+ computer:

  1. Right-click the Sophos shield in the system tray, and select 'Open Sophos Endpoint Security and Control'.
  2. In the 'Help and information' panel, click 'View product information'.
  3. In the 'Product information' panel under 'Anti-virus and HIPS', select 'Software'.
  4. From here you can see 'Last updated'. This should typically display a current date. If this is is not up-to-date, there may be an updating problem, in which case see article 118209.
  5. From this window, you can also see which versions of the following are installed:
    • Sophos Anti-Virus
    • Detection engine (virus engine)
    • Detection data (virus data)
  6. If you want to confirm that these items are up-to-date, make a note of the versions installed on your computer, and compare them with the listed current versions given in article 11846.

On a Mac OS X computer:

  1. In the System tray in the top right-hand corner of the screen, click on the white and black Sophos shield.
  2. Click 'Show AutoUpdate window'. This will display the 'Last updated' date. This should typically display a current date. If this is is not up-to-date, there may be an updating problem, in which case see article 118209.
  3. Select 'About Sophos Anti-Virus' to display which versions of the following are installed:
    • Sophos Anti-Virus
    • Detection engine (virus engine)
    • Detection data (virus data)
  4. If you want to confirm that these items are up-to-date, make a note of the versions installed on your computer, and compare them with the listed current versions given in article 11846.
