AutoUpdate skips downloads

Within the Small Business Suite alc.log file on a computer running Sophos AutoUpdate, scheduled downloads might appear to have been skipped. This can affect any standalone installation which updates directly from Sophos, regardless of whether it is PureMessage Small Business Edition (SBE) or Sophos Anti-Virus Small Business Edition.

No white-cross on a red-circle will appear in the system tray on the computer involved as this is not logged as an update failure. The next download attempt will be successful. The following messages will be seen in the alc.log file:

*************** Sophos AutoUpdate started ***************
Installing phase terminated
Downloading phase terminated
Scheduled download skipped
*************** Sophos AutoUpdate started ***************

Sophos AutoUpdate has not failed. It is preventing more than one scheduled update within the hour. Although the previous update started more than an hour ago, it finished less than an hour ago. Thus, updates will take place every two hours, rather than hourly. This update frequency should be adequate for virus protection. Manual updates can be made at any time.

Note: Computers managed by the Sophos Control Center are not affected.

What to do

To update hourly:

  1. Right-click the AutoUpdate system tray shield icon
  2. Select 'Configure'
  3. Select the Schedule tab
  4. Change the update frequency from 60 to 65 minutes.

Technical details

By default, computers running Sophos AutoUpdate that are not managed by the Sophos Control Center will check for updates from the CID at every hour. To prevent unmanaged computers constantly updating, e.g. every five minutes, the update frequency is restricted. As a result, the following can happen:

  1. An update check is performed at 11:41:07 by Sophos AutoUpdate.
  2. A download is initiated which finishes at 11:43.
  3. The next update check is performed at 12:41:07.
  4. Sophos AutoUpdate notes that the last update finished only 58 minutes ago and so skips the update.
  5. The next update check scheduled for 13:41:07 is unaffected as Sophos AutoUpdate notes that the last update check was 1 hour and 58 minutes ago.
