Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux: Controlling RPM version numbers with mkinstpkg

  • Article ID: 118981
  • Updated: 22 Feb 2013

This article describes how to set the version numbers for RPM installation packages created with mkinstpkg (SAV 9.x) or (SAV 7.x).
For a basic overview on creating installation packages, see the mkinstpkg artcile.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)
SAV for Linux 7.x
SAV for Linux 9.x

Operating systems

What To Do

By default the RPM package is created with a version of 0.0 and a release number of 1. For example, the default filename is savinstpkg-0.0-1.i386.rpm.   The RPM version and release details have no impact on Sophos Anti-Virus as the product is self-updating.

If you do wish to change the RPM version numbering to help with your deployment, use these options:

  • mkinstpkg -r --rpm-version=<VERSION> --rpm-release=<RELEASE>

Use a version number of your choice (Must not contain hyphens).  For example, you may wish to use the Sophos Anti-Virus version:

  • mkinstpkg -r --rpm-version=9.0.0
    • A package named savinstpkg-9.0.0-1.i386.rpm is created

The release number can also be changed (Must not contain hyphens).  Typically this identifies the number of times this version has been packaged.  :

  • mkinstpkg -r --rpm-version=9.0.0 --rpm-release=2
    • A package named savinstpkg-9.0.0-2.i386.rpm is created

NOTE:  Sophos Anti-Virus is self-updating and is not updated via RPMs or package managers.  The version and release number shown by rpm will remain the same when Sophos Anti-Virus is updated.
