Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux / UNIX: UpdatePeriodMinutes interval is not respected

There is a delay in running savupdate, or updates are not run at the correct time according to UpdatePeriodMinutes. Updates can occur slightly before or after the scheduled time.

If savd is performing other operations there can be a delay in calculating the next update time.

What To Do

To update at an exact time of day, we recommend you disable automatic updates and use 'cron' to control savupdate.

If you require verbose output from the savupdate command when run from cron, you will need to prepend the command with SAVUPDATE_IS_INTERACTIVE=1

Additional information: Clock skew on VM guests, or systems running NTPD

Some programs like VMware tools or NTPD may skew the clock if the system is keeping time incorrectly. When the clock is stepped between updates this can have unpredictable results on the update interval.

Sophos Anti-Virus for Linux/UNIX v9 improves tolerance for clock skew, by periodically recalculating and adjusting the time until the next scheduled update. We recommend upgrading to SAV9.
