To ensure that you are fully protected by our products, once installed, the threat detection software must be fully up to date.

This article describes and lists the current versions of Sophos products.

  • The monthly maintenance releases

Every month Sophos releases a 'maintenance release' for versions of Endpoint Security and Control / Sophos Anti-virus.

Note: These monthly maintenance releases are distinct and separate from the frequent updates to the IDE files. IDEs are the files that contain threat identities, and these may be released throughout each day in response to newly discovered threats. For more information on IDEs see article 10350.

For more information on monthly releases and a list of the current versions, click the Monthly maintenance releases tab below.

  • Current product versions

Updates to the products, including new functionality and fixes to known issues, are released as part of the ongoing development of our products.

Notification of these new product releases is made on the website, in the Knowledgebase, on the SophosTalk forum, the Sophos User Bulletin Board, and via Twitter

For a list of the currently supported versions of our products, click the Current product versions tab below.

Note: changes to the content or scheduling of these releases will not compromise your protection.

These releases relate to the underlying threat detection software that we use, and may include updates to:

  • the Sophos Anti-Virus software
  • the threat (virus) engine
  • threat (virus) data

To check which versions are installed on your computers, refer to the following product specific articles:
SAV for Windows, SAV for Mac, SAV for UNIX/Linux, How to check the version from the console.

Release dates for monthly updates

Monthly updates are now being rolled out over the month, rather than all being released on one day. Some customers will receive their updates early in the month, and some will receive them later. This means that you may not see the latest versions on your system immediately. This article lists the versions being rolled out during the current calendar month.

Preview packages

For details about the software subscriptions, including the Preview packages, as they apply to Enterprise Console v 5.2.1 and above, see KB 119216.

Detailed information about the monthly update for your product

This is listed in the product release notes - view these by clicking the links in the 'Version' column in the table below.

Note: These monthly maintenance releases are distinct and separate from the frequent updates to the IDE files, which are the files that contain threat identities, and which may be released throughout each day in response to newly discovered threats. For further information about IDEs see KB 10350.

Term Description
VDL meaning 1: abbreviation for Virus Description Language
meaning 2: sometimes used when indicating the version of the detection (threat) data file, e.g. VDL 4.94 was the Threat data file version released in October 2013.
Virus Description Language Sophos's proprietary computer programming language specifically written to define the process required to identify and clean up computer malware, detecting items such as PUAs, and in Application Control. Virus identities are written in VDL by the expert analysts in SophosLabs.
Virus data [files] also known as Detection data or Threat data [files]
Virus data is the name given to the group of files (largely written in VDL) that are used by the threat detection engine and include .IDEs, .VDBs, and some xml files. Virus (threat) data files are loaded into memory (RAM) and used by the threat detection engine. In Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows the virus data mainly consists of the following files: C:\Program Files (x86)\Sophos\Sophos Anti-Virus\vdl*.* (depending on the version of Windows)
Each new release of these files is given a version number: see VDL meaning 2, above
Threat detection engine (threat engine), also previously known as virus engine The threat detection engine provides the ability to analyze computer files to determine the format of the files, and provides an environment in which to run IDEs. Each new release of the engine is given a version number.
IDE (Virus identity file) A file that enables Sophos Anti-Virus to detect and disinfect a particular virus, worm, Trojan, or item of spyware. We may release IDEs several times each day. After one month, IDE files are rolled up and included in the virus data. This allows them to be loaded faster. For a full description of IDEs see KB 10350.
Warehouse A warehouse is a store of programs and data published by Sophos. Warehouses are stored in a repository, which is a particular location on a server. One repository can contain multiple warehouses.
Low delta (warehouse) A low delta warehouse contains a “frozen” version of a package (e.g., Endpoint Security and Control 10.2) that receives only threat engine and IDE updates for its entire lifetime, barring any vulnerabilities we might find.
