This article lists some of the commands you can use for checking tls in the commandline.

What To Do

  • To check if a mail server provides tls:
    openssl s_client -starttls smtp -crlf -connect
  • To show the server's tls certificate:
    openssl s_client -starttls smtp -crlf -connect | openssl x509 -noout -text
  • To check if the mail server supports a special cipher:
    openssl s_client -starttls smtp -crlf -connect  -cipher AES256-SHA -debug -state -msg
