Priority of SafeGuard encryption rules for our file based encryption products

SafeGuard LAN Crypt and SafeGuard Enterprise share the same file based encryption mechanism. This mechanism is rule based, and determines for each file path, which encryption rule is applicable.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)

SafeGuard LAN Crypt Client for PC
SafeGuard File Share 6.0
SafeGuard Data Exchange 6.0
SafeGuard Cloud Storage 6.0

What to do

If more than one rule from different products are applicable, the product with the highest priority wins.

The default application priority is:

  • Cloud Storage
  • Secure Data Exchange
  • File Share
  • LAN Crypt

You can change the default priorities by creating/changing a registry value.

Key:\HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\UTIMACO\SGLCENC

Value: REG_SZ "ApplicationPriority"

Set "ApplicationPriority" to a semicolon separated list of product shortnames, starting with the highest priority. The shortnames are:

  • SGNCSE
  • SGNDX
  • SGNFS
  • SGLC

The default priorities would result in "SGNCSE;SGNDX;SGNFS;SGLC”.

In general, we recommend that you do not have encryption rules from different products applied to a single path.
