Issue
If you install SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac 5.50.1 on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), Mac OS X 10.7 will no longer start. Instead the computer boots up into the Mac OS X Recovery partition.

Although it is possible to run the installer for SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac 5.50.1 on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion), SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac 5.50.1 has been released and tested only for Mac OS X 10.5.x (Leopard) and 10.6.x (Snow Leopard).

10.5 (Leopard) recent patch level, 32bit kernel, 32bit/64bit user mode

What To Do

In order to avoid the possibility of the above issue occurring, SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac 5.50.1 must not be installed on Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion).

If the above issue has already occurred, you will need to follow the procedure in knowledgebase article 113902. which describes How to restore Mac OS X 10.7 following installation on this unsupported operating system.

Sophos is planning to release within the coming weeks a new version of SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac, that supports the installation on Mac OS X 10.7.x (Lion) .

NOTE: Operating system upgrades (e.g. from 10.6 to 10.7) are not supported. If you want to upgrade your operating system, do the following: 

  1. Decrypt the partitions of your Mac.
  2. Uninstall Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption 5.50
  3. Upgrade the operating system
  4. Install Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption v. 5.55 (soon to be released) and encrypt the partitions again.
