Issue
By default, Enterprise Console does not allow you to use secure SMTP in email reporting. This article describes how you can enable this on your system.

This functionality will be made available in a future release, without the necessity of using the workaround described below.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product(s) and version(s)

Enterprise Console 5.0.0

Operating systems
Supported operating systems

What To Do

NOTE: This does not apply to scheduled reports.

On the server on which Enterprise Console is installed, you need to create new registry keys, and then create and use suitable passwords.

Before you start, refer to the knowledgebase article warning on editing the registry.

  1. Open the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Sophos\EE\Sophos Enterprise Console\EmailAuthentication and create the following values within it:
    "SMTPAuthRetryNonAuth" DWORD 1 (by default)
    "SMTPAuthUsername"  STRING
    "SMTPAuthPassword" STRING
  2. Specify the username and password that you want to use, the password must be in 'clear text'.
  3. Secure the whole of the above key in the 'Permissions' so that only the System user and Administrator can use it

NOTE: If you have more than 1 SMTP server, or if each sub-estate has its own SMTP server with its own unique account, ensure that you create and use a common account
