What To Do

As of Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac 6.01.0, it is now possible to update the Mac Firmware even when Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac is installed. Please see Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac 6.01.0 Release Notes for further information around how this is possible.

There are two available options to update the Apple EFI Firmware on a Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac encrypted computer:

  • Boot the computer from an external boot media having the same Mac OS X version on without having Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac installed.

Note: Do not use the Mac OS X installation source.

    1. Boot the external media while pressing the ALT button (Apple option key) to enter Apple EFI boot menu.
    2. Select and boot the computer from the external boot media.
    3. Run Software update and perform the Apple EFI Update.
    4. After a successful Apple EFI Update installation the computer will perform an automatic shutdown.
    5. Remove the external boot media and boot the computer which will cause the Apple EFI to be updated.
    6. After a successful update the computer will perform a reboot and the computer can now be booted from the Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac decrypted drive.

  • Decrypt and uninstall Sophos SafeGuard Disk Encryption for Mac to perform an Apple EFI Firmware Update. After a successful update, install Sophos.
