How to configure the Mac OS X firewall to allow communication with the Enterprise Console

This article explains how to configure the Mac OS X Firewall to allow communication with the Enterprise Console.

Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac OS X

What To Do


Mac OS X 10.4.x

  1. Open System Preferences and click Sharing
  2. Select the Firewall tab
  3. Click the lock icon to make changes and enter Administrator credentials
  4. Click New and enter the following options:

    Port Name: Other
    TCP Port Number(s): 8192-8194
    Description: Sophos RMS

  5. Click OK


Mac OS X 10.5.x

  1. Open System Preferences and click Security
  2. Select the Firewall tab
  3. Click the lock icon to make changes and enter Administrator credentials
  4. Click the + icon and browse to /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/RMS
  5. Add both SophosManagementAgent and SophosMessageRouter
  6. Ensure 'Allow incoming connections' is enabled for both above entries


Mac OS X 10.6.x

  1. Open System Preferences and click Security
  2. Select the Firewall tab
  3. Click the lock icon to make changes and enter Administrator credentials
  4. Click Advanced... 
  5. Click the + icon and browse to /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/RMS
  6. Add both SophosManagementAgent and SophosMessageRouter
  7. Ensure 'Allow incoming connections' is enabled for both above entries
  8. Click OK


Mac OS X 10.7.x and 10.8.x

By default the 'Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections' is ticked and allows network access. The following steps are only required when this option is unticked.

  1. Open System Preferences and click Security & Privacy
  2. Select the Firewall tab
  3. Click the lock icon to make changes and enter Administrator credentials
  4. Click Firewall Options...
  5. Click the + icon and browse to /Library/Sophos Anti-Virus/RMS
  6. Add both SophosManagementAgent and SophosMessageRouter
  7. Ensure 'Allow incoming connections' is enabled for both above entries
  8. Click OK


Note: If Sophos Anti-Virus has been installed prior to enabling the firewall, you may receive a prompt asking whether you want to allow both the SophosManagementAgent and SophosMessageRouter applications to accept incoming network connections. Click Allow to accept these requests.
