What could be the cause if the automatic certificate assignment does not work?

We have seen the following behaviour.

Windows XP tries by default to update the CA-Root certificates via an internet connection. If a PC does not have a internet connection (only a intranet or offline usage) this could cause an error and then the service crypt32 stops working. This would result in further problems when using certificates.

You will see this error message in the Eventlog:

To avoid this error the Windows Component "Update Root Certificates" must be uninstalled as shown here

After restarting the machine, the behaviour no longer occurs.
