Utimaco's Data Leakage Protection and encryption strategy validated by top analyst firm

June 24, 2008 Sophos Press Release

Utimaco - The Data Security Company, today announced that an Aberdeen Group survey of senior-level, enterprise IT and security executives revealed that organizations with top performance in protecting their sensitive data experienced 92 percent fewer data loss incidents than the industry average, through a combination of data discovery and classification, data monitoring and filtering, and endpoint data protection. The Aberdeen report, entitled Data Loss Prevention: Little Leaks Sink the Ship, published on June 19, validates Utimaco's vision for a multi-layered security architecture centered on industry-leading DLP and encryption technologies.

According to the report, organizations with Best-in-Class performance experienced 27 percent fewer data loss incidents than the Industry Average from trusted internal users and a stunning 92 percent fewer data loss incidents attributed to malicious outsiders. The risk of data loss comes from all types of data, from innumerable "channels" for potential leakage (e.g., USB sticks, iPods, email, etc.), and from end user behavior ranging from inadvertent to well-intentioned to malicious. Aberdeen's research indicates that strategies for protecting against data loss in only one channel can never be effective and that organizations should take an information-centric approach to protecting sensitive data, using a combination of network-based and endpoint-based solutions to prevent data loss.

Utimaco, with a twenty-five year history of providing best-in-class DLP solutions for global enterprise customers across the vertical market spectrum, launched SafeGuard Enterprise 5.3 earlier this year, the only solution on the market that combines the critical port and device control, encryption and DLP that Aberdeen's research identifies as essential for organizations of all sizes to realize a true, multi-layered security solution.

"While the vast majority of data loss incidents are the result of simple human error, they can still be incredibly costly and expose organizations to undue levels of risk and non-compliance," said Derek E. Brink, vice president and research fellow for IT Security, Aberdeen. "The highest levels of data protection result from a combination of enabling technologies that include data leakage protection and encryption, and security providers such as Utimaco that offer both functions in one solution are aligning with what we see as a more comprehensive, Best-in-Class approach to preventing data loss."

SafeGuard Enterprise 5.3 is comprised of the existing SafeGuard Management Center module the SafeGuard Device Encryption, the Data Exchange as well as Partner Connect and SafeGuard Configuration Protection module. Further modules rounding off Utimaco's data security suite are to be added in later product versions: SafeGuard File & Folder Encryption secures user data that is exchanged between working groups. In addition, it can be used to encrypt both local disk drives and network servers at file and directory level, and to assign them individual access rights.

"We're pleased to see that the results of this Aberdeen Group survey are in synch with our vision for optimal device security that encompasses critical DLP and encryption functions," said Deb Symons, Vice President, Marketing, Americas, Utimaco. "We look forward to furthering Utimaco's long and successful track record of helping customers across all verticals safeguard their critical data by continuing to anticipate and react to the changing IT security landscape with solutions that meet our customers' needs."
