Sophos and SurfControl, leaders in IT security and web
filtering, have announced today a technology partnership that will
integrate the world's best website categorization database into a
new web and malware security appliance from Sophos.
The first product to benefit from this partnership will be
Sophos's new WS1000 web security
and control hardware appliance, integrating SurfControl's
market-leading URL classification engine, which has categorized
more than 21 million web pages.
"The combination of SurfControl's world-class URL database on
the Sophos WS1000 appliance allows enterprises to more effectively
manage the risks and issues commonly associated with employee
internet access," said Rocco Donnino, Vice President of Worldwide
Business Development, SurfControl. "We have long respected Sophos'
expertise at fighting known and unknown malware. This partnership
between industry leaders brings customers unmatched data protection
and control of their IT assets."
The Sophos WS1000 web appliance will allow system administrators
to manage end user productivity through SurfControl's categorized
database of websites. Administrators can customize product settings
to specify the categories of web pages that their employer wishes
to monitor or block (such as gambling, pornography or sports
sites).
At the same time, existing Sophos technology will deliver
protection against known and unknown viruses, worms, Trojans,
spyware, adware, and phishing websites.
"Enterprise customers want greater control as well as security,
and our partnership with SurfControl is an essential part of us
delivering that solution. Our combined technology allows system
administrators to stop malware dead in its tracks, and to prevent
inappropriate web surfing from having a negative impact on
productivity," said Steve
Munford, CEO of Sophos. "SurfControl is the world's leading
expert in categorizing the web, and we look forward to bringing
their technology to a wider audience who are crying out for more
control over what types of websites their users can access."
