Sophos appoints Chief Operating Officer

Steve Munford

Appointment bolsters Sophos for future growth worldwide

Abingdon, UK - Sophos, a global leader in network security, has announced the appointment of Steve Munford to the role of chief operating officer (COO) worldwide. In this newly established position, Munford will be reporting to Sophos's co-founders and joint CEOs, Dr. Jan Hruska and Dr. Peter Lammer, and will assume, with immediate effect, global responsibility for operations, which includes leading and supporting Sophos's senior managers, future growth and product expansion. Munford will be based at Sophos's headquarters outside Oxford in the UK.

Munford brings a wealth of senior management and technical expertise to the role of chief operating officer. As president of ActiveState, he successfully positioned the North American-based company as a leader in email security software. When Sophos acquired ActiveState in 2003, Munford took the role of president of Sophos for North America.

Prior to his joining ActiveState, Munford held senior management positions at Seanix - the largest PC manufacturer in Canada - and at Coopers & Lybrand, where he oversaw numerous re-engineering and performance improvement initiatives.

"We are delighted to welcome Steve to this new role," said Dr. Jan Hruska. "This appointment reinforces Sophos's commitment to its staff, customers and partners around the world, as well as positioning us for significant sales and company growth in the new fiscal year. We are confident that Steve's appointment will have a strong and positive impact on Sophos's future."

The appointment reflects Sophos's sustained growth over the past two decades, which saw it transformed from a UK anti-virus vendor to a global computer security specialist with more than 900 employees and 35 million business users worldwide.
