Remote Update's addition to the Enterprise Manager suite offers
increased protection with minimal overhead
Singapore - Sophos, a world leader in corporate anti-virus
solutions, today announced the immediate availability of Remote
Update, a new application that easily updates remote computers with
the latest virus protection updates and upgrades for Sophos
Anti-Virus software. Designed to fit in seamlessly with the
Enterprise Manager suite, Remote Update offers yet another layer of
protection to Sophos customers who connect to their network
remotely.
Historically, network administrators have had difficulty
ensuring the security of home workers and mobile employees, leaving
the entire corporate network vulnerable through this avenue. Remote
Update ensures that employees who aren't always, or rarely,
connected to corporate wide area network (WAN) are protected
against the very latest virus threats.
"With the number of viruses 'in the wild' increasing every day,
organisations need to take proactive steps to protect themselves,"
said Brian Burke, senior research analyst of internet security
software at IDC. "Telecommuters and 'road warriors' are one of the
most vulnerable points to an organization's security network, and
administrators have had a traditionally difficult time enforcing
strict security measures. Sophos's Remote Update application
combats one of the biggest security concerns of this vulnerable
population."
Remote Update installs and monitors Sophos's desktop software,
Sophos Anti-Virus, on remote users' computers, updating it with new
virus protection as required.
Through Remote Update, employees from home or on the road are
able to access a central installation directory (CID) on their
companies' websites or networks via the internet, their WAN or
their local area networks (LAN). Remote Update can be easily
configured to monitor the amount of bandwidth available to ensure
that other applications are not hindered by virus updates. To keep
bandwidth requirements to a minimum, Sophos virus protection
updates are typically only 1-2 KB in size, while the monthly
product update or upgrade is as small as 250 KB.
One of the keys to an effective anti-virus solution is keeping
the system up-to-date with the most recent virus protection
updates. This task can be tedious and even difficult in larger
organizations. Created to address this concern, the Enterprise
Manager suite reduces administrative overhead and ensures that the
entire organization is consistent in its level of security.
The Enterprise Manager Suite currently consists of the following
four components:
- EM Console, the interface to the suite;
- EM Library, an application that enables the secure, automatic
download and distribution of Sophos Anti-Virus and the latest virus
identity files from a dedicated Sophos website to local file
servers and desktops;
- SAVAdmin, a graphical management tool that can install,
configure and monitor Sophos Anti-Virus across a multi-server
Windows network from a single, central Windows machine; and
- Remote Update, an application that enables the download of
virus protection and Sophos Anti-Virus product updates to the
desktops of remoteusers through the Internet, or the organization's
WAN or LAN connections.
The Enterprise Manager suite is available now, including the
Remote Update application.
