First antivirus
vendor to offer complete protection for Unix users.
Unix users can now receive ongoing protection against virus
attack, as Sophos Anti-Virus becomes available for a range of Unix
platforms, including Linux Intel and Solaris SPARC.
Sophos is the first anti-virus vendor to provide monthly updates
for this platform, ending the neglect of Unix users who have had to
rely on outdated software in the past.
"Monthly updates for anti-virus products should be mandatory,"
said Paul Ducklin, head of research at Sophos. "When viruses as
serious as CIH emerge, attacking boot files and destroying PC
start-up routines, companies need to have solutions to control
this. Annual or even bi-annual updates don't even come close to
addressing unexpected virus attacks. The release of our Unix
product is even more important given the recent push by Intel to
make Unix servers a high volume market."
Sophos Anti-Virus has been tailored specifically to meet the
needs of the expanding Unix user base in the financial and data
processing markets. These sectors, in particular, require secure,
powerful machines to meet their IT needs.
"Many organisations using Unix fileservers with PC clients may
be exposing themselves to virus threats as they access the web
without sufficient protection," said Ian Whalley, senior programmer
at Sophos. "Those with outdated anti-virus software are equally at
risk."
In addition, Sophos's Unix product also allows third party
developers to integrate with SAVI (Sophos Anti-Virus Interface),
which allows up to a thirty-fold increase in virus checking speeds
for gateway products such as firewalls and email scanners.
Sophos Anti-Virus supports the following Unix platforms; Linux
Intel, FreeBSD Intel, Solaris SPARC, Solaris Intel, AIX for RS6000
and SCO. The Linux and FreeBSD versions will be free to home
users.
Sophos is headquartered in Boston, US and Oxford, UK. More information is available at www.sophos.com.
