What kind of data is sent to a mobile device through a Sophos Server?

This article provides an overview of all the information that is sent to a Mobile device via a Sophos-Server.

Details

The following services need to transport data to a mobile device via a Server located in a Sophos Data-Center.
Please note: All communication channels from and to the Sophos Servers are encrypted.

SMS

Use Case
Enrolling a device via a computer.
Frequency
Every time a device is rolled out via a computer.
Data sent via Sophos
The configuration-SMS includes data to set up a device
- Download link for the MDM Profile / Client-App
- Information on how to reach the MDM Server
Data visible by Sophos The encoded configuration data sent to the device.
No personal information.

iOS App Notifications

Use Case
Triggering the SMC Client App.
Frequency
Daily for every device.
Data sent via Sophos
Only a trigger to send the location is sent from the SMC server to the device.
Data visible by Sophos The Trigger that is sent to the device.
Sophos cannot see the command sent to the device.
Apple requires the transmission of the trigger via a secure channel with a predefined SSL Certificate. To minimize attacks to the mobile client app we decided not to distribute the private key for this channel. Therefore we need to route the triggers for the iOS Client App via a Sophos Server.

Location Services

Use Case
Location of a specific device.
Frequency
Every time the administrator requests the location manually.
Data sent via Sophos
Only a trigger to send the location is sent from the SMC server to the device.
The actual location data is sent directly from the device to the SMC server.
Data visible by Sophos The trigger that is sent to the device.
Sophos cannot see the location.

iOS App Messages

Use Case
Sending a message to a specific device that is displayed to the user.
Frequency
Once for every message that is sent to an iOS device.
Data sent via Sophos
The complete message is sent via a Sophos Server.
Data visible by Sophos The complete message content
