If possible, we recommend that you change your default warehouse, working directory and update locations before using the Download Security Software wizard. If that's not possible, we've also included instructions for doing it after installation is complete.

Known to apply to the following Sophos product and version

Sophos Update Manager
Sophos Enterprise Manager 4.7.0
Enterprise Console 5.0.0
Enterprise Console 4.7.0
Enterprise Console 4.5.0

Before

  1. Once the wizard opens, do not continue with it until you have performed the following steps.
  2. Open the file system.xml in a text editor and make your changes.
  3. Save your changes, restart the Sophos Update Manager service and then continue with the wizard.

After

  1. Create a new folder e.g. S:\Sophos
  2. Remove the SophosUpdate share from:
    • Windows 2008: C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\
    • Windows 2003: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\
  3. Create a new subdirectory called 'Update Manager' (e.g. S:\Sophos\Update Manager)
  4. Share the new subdirectory (S:\Sophos\Update Manager) as 'SophosUpdate' changing the share permissions to ‘Everyone’ Full Control.
  5. Open the file system.xml in a text editor and make your changes. For example:
    • Change LocalPath from either C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\ or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager to S:\sophos\Update Manager
    • Change TempPath from either C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\Working or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager\Working to S:\sophos\Working
  6. Save your changes, restart the Sophos Update Manager service.
  7. In the Update Managers view, right-click the Update Manager that you have just changed and select 'Comply with Configuration'. This will update all of your update policies and locations automatically.
Within the control center right click on the server and choose reapply central configuration.
  8. Right-click the Update Manager again and select 'Update Now'.
For the control center on the top left select 'Update Now'
  9. Check that you have the following folders:
    • S:\Sophos\Update Manager\CIDs
    • S:\Sophos\Update Manager\Warehouse
    • S:\Sophos\Working
    • And the share \\computername\SophosUpdate
  10. Once you have confirmed that the new location is working properly, delete the default locations:

    • Windows 2008:
      Warehouse: C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\Warehouse
      Working directory: C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Working
      Update Location: C:\ProgramData\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\CIDs
    • Windows 2003:
      Warehouse: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\Warehouse
      Working directory: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager\Working
      Update Location: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Sophos\Update Manager\Update Manager\CIDs

Note: The original working directory may exceed the 256 character path limit in Windows. This will result in an error while attempting to delete the original working directory referring to a locked or missing file.

Workaround
To delete the old working directory:

  1. Open that directory and, delete what you can.
  2. The sub-directories you can’t delete you can rename to a shorter name. (The sub directories are 32 character GUID’s and many have sub directories with the same structure.)
  3. You can now delete these sub-directories and then delete the old working directory.
