Sophos small business solutions: Exporting and importing client firewall configurations

When constructing, or editing, a Sophos Client Firewall configuration for Sophos small business solutions, you should make a backup of your previous configuration. If necessary, you can then re-import it.

You can export and import Sophos Client Firewall configurations from Sophos Control Center, or at the local workstation.

What to do

Configurations from Sophos Control Center and individual workstations can be exported and imported in either direction.

1. Exporting

Exporting from Sophos Control Center.

  1. Open Sophos Control Center.
  2. In the menu bar, select Action|Advanced firewall configuration.
  3. In the General tab, select 'Export'.
  4. Save the current configuration as a *.conf file in a known place, e.g. save 'backup.conf' to the Windows Desktop.
  5. Click 'Cancel'. (There is no need to save your settings.)

Exporting from the local workstation.

  1. Right-click the firewall icon in the System tray.
  2. Select 'Configure'.
  3. In the General tab, select 'Export'.
  4. Save the current configuration (e.g. as backup.conf) in a known place (e.g. on the Windows Desktop).
  5. Click 'Cancel'. (There is no need to save your settings.)

2. Importing

Warning: The following instructions will overwrite all of your current Sophos Client Firewall settings with those from the imported file. Make a backup of your existing configuration before importing the new one.

Importing with Sophos Control Center.

  1. Open Sophos Control Center.
  2. In the menu bar, select Action|Advanced firewall configuration.
  3. In the General tab, select 'Import'.
  4. Browse to your saved configuration and select it.
  5. Click 'Open'.
  6. Ensure that the following are selected:
    • Load the general configuration
    • Load the global and application rules
    • Overwrite
  7. Click 'OK'.

Importing at the local workstation.

  1. Right-click the firewall icon in the System tray.
  2. Select 'Configure'.
  3. In the General tab, select 'Import'.
  4. Browse to your saved configuration and select it.
  5. Click 'Open'.
  6. Ensure that the following are selected:
    • Load the general configuration
    • Load the global and application rules
    • Overwrite
  7. Click 'OK'.
