Even Rocket Scientists fall prey to malware

It may not have been a Rocket Scientist but the report on The Register that a NASA employee was conned into installing malware, should be a wake-up call that it could happen to anyone in any company.

Though the malware was not named, looking at the DOJ press release raises a few concerns:

“As a result of the spy-ware being installed, and without the NASA employee’s knowledge, the attacker was able to obtain her personally-identifying information, including bank account numbers, social security number, driver’s license information, residence address, and passwords to various computer accounts, as well as intercept private electronic communications.”

The use of a broad ranging solution (HIPS, Spyware and adware, spam, web etc.) will be able to mitigate against the threats of malware. The user, again, is the weakest link in the security chain.
